Avatar: Energybending Is Controversial

Towards the end of Avatar the Last Airbender, Aang was met with a difficult choice. Sozin's comet was fast approaching and Fire Lord Ozai was going to use its power to destroy the remaining resistance and take over the world. All his life Aang had been taught that taking a life was wrong. Despite this, all of his past lives and his friends told him that killing Ozai was the only way to bring an end to the war. This was something Aang could not accept. He was out of options until he met the Lion Turtle, a powerful being that bestowed the power of bending onto humans. The Lion Turtle gave Aang a unique power, the power to energy bend. This would allow Aang to seal Ozai’s bending away permanently. At the moment it was the best compromise for Aang. It would allow him to defeat the Fire Lord, but spare his life. Later, during the Legend of Korra, Amon used a similar technique to take away a number of key character’s bending; some good and some bad. Amon was determined to rid the world of bending so that everyone would be equal in his eyes. These are two instances of energy bending and it brings up a moral quandary, is energy bending immoral? Outside of the specific instances that it has been used, is the practice itself immoral to use? Today we will attempt to answer that question. At the end of the day, the decision is up to you whether energy bending is right or wrong, but we will try to present some compelling arguments.
