I grew up without my dad. My parents separated before I was born and divorced before I was two. In the 1960s that was not common. Today many boys are growing up without the presence or positive influence of a father in their daily lives. Fortunately for me, I had a number of positive male role models in my life, especially during my teenage years. One, in particular, became something of a surrogate dad to me. His name was Mark Gould. Mark opened his home to me. Took me camping with him and his family. Showed me things like changing the brakes on my mom's car. On more than one occasion he chewed me out for doing something he thought was stupid. Most of all, Mark Gould loved me, and I felt his love, even and perhaps especially when he was chewing me out.
