It is at the crossroads of Jewish & Christian history and is popularly known as the hometown of Mary Magdalene. Mary Magdalene was the first eyewitness of the risen Christ and was commissioned by Jesus to inform the disciples of his resurrection. The site was also known as Taricheae means the place of salted fish. It was the most significant urban center on the western coast of the Sea of Galilee until the founding of Tiberias in 19 CE. Today, Magdala features a 1st-century synagogue, marketplace, town, and Jewish ritual baths; Duc In Altum, a place for worship, mass, prayer, and reflection; and a guesthouse!
