Aliah Sheffield

My EP is out now! https://pillar.io/aliahsheffield There’s no question about it, singer-songwriter Aliah Sheffield, aka Nikki Aliah, has always loved music. For her, it isn’t just a “thing” she does, it’s a way of life. It’s in her blood; her heart; her soul. Born in Newark, New Jersey and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Aliah has always been a singer. Her musical influences cover a wide range: Deniece Williams, Donny Hathaway, Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle, to name a few. She played a number of instruments in grade school, including clarinet and saxophone. In high school, she was encouraged to explore the piano as she discovered her songwriting abilities. While studying film scoring at Berklee College of Music she began to experiment with fusing genres, particularly soul and R&B, to create her unique keyboard driven style. Yes, her music is heartfelt; her vulnerability definitely shows. But at the same time, her songs are also inspiring and empowering.

Slow Jams Mix

Quiet storm is a radio format and genre of contemporary R&B, performed in a smooth, romantic, jazz-influenced style. It was named after the title song on Smokey Robinson's 1975 album A Quiet Storm. The radio format was pioneered in 1976 by Melvin Lindsey, while he was an intern at the Washington, D.C. radio station WHUR-FM. It eventually became regarded as an identifiable subgenre of R&B.[3] Quiet storm was marketed to upscale mature African-American audiences during the 1980s, while falling out of favor with young listeners in the age of hip hop

Bobby Womack

Known as the “Last Soul Man”, Bobby Womack was an accomplished musician, dynamic stage performer, and a prolific songwriter. He first came to prominence in the 1950s as part of The Womack Brothers, a gospel group that was comprised his siblings Cecil, Harry, Curtis, and Friendly. Impressed with the group, Sam Cooke encouraged them to come to Los Angeles where he signed them to his SAR label. Making the transition from gospel to R&B, they recorded as The Valentinos, ultimately hitting with “Lookin’ For A Love” and “It’s All Over Now”, written by Bobby and his sister-in-law Shirley Womack. The song was covered by the Rolling Stones, becoming their first #1 hit. It also charted with versions by Patti Drew in 1966 and as a duet between Womack and Bill Withers in 1975.
