Alabama Band

Before Alabama, bands were usually relegated to a supporting role in country music. In the first part of the century, bands were popular with audiences across the country, but as recordings became available, nearly every popular recording artist was a vocalist, not a group. Alabama was the group that made country bands popular again. Emerging in the late '70s, the band had roots in both country and rock; in fact, many of Alabama's musical concepts, particularly the idea of a performing band, owed more to rock and pop than hardcore country. However, there is no denying that Alabama is a country band -- the bandmembers' pop instincts may come from rock, but their harmonies, songwriting, and approach are indebted to country, particularly the Bakersfield sound of , bluegrass, and the sound of Nashville pop. A sleek country-rock sound made the group the most popular country group in history, selling more records than any other artist of the '80s and earning stacks of awards.

Cotton Pickin Kids

We are the "Cotton Pickin Kids"! The Cipollari's are a family of 13 who grew up singing and playing bluegrass music. As the saying goes, "Bluegrass is the best music because it sounds the same when the power goes out." Each child was taught at a young age to play various instruments, whether it be the guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, or harmonica. They would often play for family and social gatherings. On one occasion, a gentleman asked Fabio "Papa" Cipollari what their band's name was. Fabio laughed and said, "We don't have one yet." The man replied, "Well, those kids can sure pick!" Fabio agreed and said, "Those Cotton Pickin Kids can sure pick!" And that is how we got our name. We are so grateful for being born and raised in such a large and loving family, smack dab in the heart of Alabama. You really can't ask for much more than that. We are truly "Cotton Pickin Blessed"! Sarah Simmons

If you get the chance to meet Sarah Simmons, you won't soon forget it. Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Sarah's musical influences started in her home long before she can remember. From the strumming of her Dad's guitar to watching old musical classics with her grandmother, Sarah was raised around melody. Throughout her childhood she pursued a number of avenues that would provide training and experience to further her dreams of someday singing professionally and touching others' hearts through song. At 13, Sarah began traveling the country and performing with a musical theater troupe. At 15, her dad gave her a guitar and she started writing her first original songs. And at 20 she set out for Memphis to study vocal music at Visible Music College. For Sarah, the measure of success is simple: if she can inspire hope in her audience, she's made it.

Danny Thompson

No British bass player comes close to being as influential as Danny Thompson. From his early career as a teenage jazz bassist and after a brief period with British saxophonist Tubby Hayes' band. He accepted an invitation to join Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated in 1964. He eventually left, with drummer Terry Cox, to form the rhythm section of Pentangle in 1967 and the group transformed traditional British folk music into a popular art form. By the time Pentangle disbanded in 1972, Thompson who by then had a stellar reputation as a session musician, collaborated extensively with Nick Drake and John Martyn. He has in his own words “served the song” which has led him to playing with artists as diverse as Donovan, Cliff Richard, Rod Stewart, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, The Blind Boys of Alabama, David Sylvain, and Talk Talk. He has also released several solo albums: Whatever (1987), Whatever Next (1989), Whatever's Best (1995) and Connected (2012).
